Given that the vast majority of ghosts are entirely non corporeal (ie have no physical body) and have to try really really hard just to make the corner of a table lift or to tap on the ceiling (at least if you listen to Most Haunted) why are the so scarey? Why are people afraid of ghosts when ghosts can't do anything at all to hurt them?
I appreciate that there are exceptions to this who CAN hurt people but they are a tiny minority...people do not fear people and it is also true that there is rather a larger percentage of those who hurt.
I do not think people are scared of what ghosts are capable of as much as what they imagine them to be capable of.
As with many spiritual and non human things (I only call them non human because I refuse to call them un-natural) they have been given a bad press in books and movies over the years.
Humans seem to believe that ghosts are not only capable of doing truly vile and hideous things they also believe that the ghosts want to behave this way.
I have observed that most humans do not think of ghosts as dead humans but more as malevolent entities who wish only harm, death and destruction. Creating fear and chaos everywhere they go!!
Personally if I was given the choice between a huge group of humans or a huge group of ghosts I know which one I would choose. Somehow ghosts retain the best of themselves whilst losing everything else, and so are much more appealing than their more solid descendants.

I think I would be inclined to agree

Forgetting poltergeists and divas and such. I think people just dont like anyone jumping out on them whether they be ghost or otherwise.
Well you could think of it this way...
Why are we, by believers, feared so much?
We are stretched out to the point we are these "Immortal Super Strengthed, Blood Sucking Warriors of the Night!"
Really, if I was one of those, I'd be set.
; D
Haha. But yes, all the myths and such, and as you all have said abotu the illusion ghosts give and the could-be threats... Just not a pleasant thing for people who do not understand.
Also it could be the fact that most people in this day believe once you are dead, you are gone from this Earth.
As if nothing can reminisce...
State of mind induces fear. Fear causes hatred. Hatred builds fires. Fires will kill us all someday. Unless we finally start thinking. (They as ingeneral the world.)
Haha.
I rambled.
XD
Ah but your ramblings make sense, my friend....so ramble on
i think i may have something slight to add to this...i dont think it was mentioned..everyone is scared of the unknown at least mortal or human beings...yes the media has added to that but there is also an excitement to it as well...the "o my gosh it really is true" feeling when you find yourself face to face with any otherkin..figure out you are one...or well come into contact with spirits...that weird passage in the brain is cleared and realization hits rather hard...
im scared of ghost but to be honest im scared of alot of things.
i think for me and most people it comes down to ghosts well they pop out at you, they're there one moment and gone the next, i dont like people coming up behind me so the thought of a ghost doing it scares me terribly
for humans i think it may be like everyone else said , the unknown
I don't really find ghosts scary, but i do dislike some of their appearance
I for one wouldn't like to see a decapitated woman gliding around my room, though i wouldn't pay much attention to a little old lady in white
I think it's fear of what might happen, the "what if's" and the media. The unknown scares people because they do'nt understand. lack of knowledge is a bad things. As too much knowledge can be too, cuz then you becmoe reckless. The effect ghosts have one people is "spooky" and sends a shiver down the spine, people are just uncomfortable about it all.
